Some significant news from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
North Carolina State has zeroed in on its next head football coach.
NC State is finalizing a deal to hire program legend and former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers as its next head football coach.
According to multiple reports, negotiations are in their final stages to bring the 44-year-old back to Raleigh. Rivers would succeed Dave Doeren, who was relieved of his duties on Oct. 24 after a disappointing 3-4 start to his 14th season as head coach of the Wolfpack.
Rivers will be making the rare jump straight from the high school ranks to a Power 4 program, as he spent the last six seasons leading St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama.
One of the most decorated players in Wolfpack history, Rivers started 51 consecutive games from 2000-03 and owns numerous school passing records. He went on to play close to two decades in the NFL, primarily with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers.
His son, Gunner Rivers, is a highly touted four-star quarterback prospect in the 2027 class who is committed to NC State.
Clemson is scheduled to face NC State in Raleigh next year.
