Swinney Comments on Reynolds Family’s Big Day

CLEMSON – Clemson quarterback Tait Reynolds may have lifted the Tigers to a 18-13 win over Syracuse with his 17 completions Saturday, but he was not the only brother in his bloodline to have a big day in the college football landscape.

In No. 3 Utah’s 28-20 win over No. 9 BYU earlier Saturday morning, Reynolds’ big brother helped his team on the other side of the ball as the Utes laid claim to this year’s ‘Holy War’ title.

With around 12 minutes left to play at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah., the Utes extended a lead on the Cougars with a three-yard touchdown run. In response, BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier led his team down the field across seven minutes and 13 plays.

The Cougars made it all the way down to Utah’s two-yard line when Bachmeier dropped back to pass on third down with just over four minutes left to play.

The veteran scanned the field, went through his progressions and, ultimately, threw the ball straight into the outstretched arms of linebacker Trey Reynolds, who returned the interception for 12 yards, all but securing a Utah win.

Four minutes later, the veteran got to celebrate Utah’s first victory over its rival since 2019.

On the other side of the country, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney heard of the interception minutes after the Tigers’ sixth victory of the season, a defensive victory over the Orange.

“I can’t confirm but somebody just told me it was a big night for the Reynolds family,” Swinney said. “Tait’s brother had the game-winning pick against BYU to seal the game. He’s the starting linebacker for Utah.”

The eldest Reynolds, a captain for the Utes, finished with eight total tackles in addition to the interception, finishing second on the team. It marked the defender’s second interception of the game and his first since Utah’s season-opening win over Idaho.

Back in Syracuse, Tait Reynolds– six years his brother’s junior in age and three years in classification– finalized Clemson’s victory with two first down pickups on the ground. With just over two minutes left to play after a final Syracuse score, Reynolds took off for respective 10 and 13 yard gains, effectively giving the Tigers their second consecutive win.

Reynolds also clinched Clemson’s win last week over Florida State with a 79-yard touchdown run, the longest by any Tiger quarterback in history.

“His brother sealed the deal for Utah and Tait sealed the deal up here in Syracuse,” Swinney said.

Additionally, the middle Reynolds brother, Porter, also got a win with UT Martin over Charleston Southern. He is the second brother to defeat the Buccaneers this season, after Tait threw for 127 yards and rushed for 40 in a 37-0 victory in a Clemson win back in October.

Next week, the Reynolds brothers will be split up into major games again, as Trey and his Utes will take on No. 22 Arizona, Tait will lead the Tigers against Georgia Tech and Porter will play at Lindenwood University.

But for today, the Reynolds family finished 3-0.
