Clemson took an early lead thanks to a grand slam by Thomas Brittle and held on for a 7-4 victory to take the series with NC State. The Tigers will go for the sweep Sunday afternoon at 1 PM.
Clate Schmidt got the start for the Tigers and went 3.2 innings giving up 8 hits, 2 runs and 1 earned run. Jonathan Meyer came in and relieved Schmidt going 1.1 innings giving up 4 hits, 2 runs and 2 earned runs. Joseph Moorefield came in and faced one batter and got a line to first base.
Kyle Schnell got the win for the Tigers going 2.2 innings and giving up 4 hits, no runs and no earned runs. Matt Campbell came in and closed it out in the ninth.
NC State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Clemson stored back in the top of the second with five runs. Steven Duggar reached on an error and advanced to third on two wild pitches. Garrett Boulware walked before Jon McGibbon singled to score Duggar. Tyler Krieger walked to load the bases. Thomas Brittle hit a grand slam down the left field line to put the Tigers up 5-1.
The Tigers extended the lead in the top of the fourth. Tyler Krieger walked with one out. Gibson reached on a fielder’s choice before Brittle was hit by a pitch. Jay Baum walked to load the bases. Wilkerson singled to score Gibson and make it 6-1.
The Pack responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth.
Clemson added an insurance run in the top of the sixth. Thomas Brittle was hit by a pitch and then stole second. Brittle advanced to third on a fly ball by Wilkerson and then scored on a passed ball to make it 7-2.
NC State responded with two in the bottom of the sixth but couldn’t get any closer.
Clemson moved to 2-0 in the ACC with the win.
