Tigers fall, NC State avoids sweep

Clemson fell 4-1 to NC State Sunday afternoon as the Tigers had two players called out at the plate and only managed one run on ten hits.

“We had men on base.  We had some opportunities.  They made a couple of good plays at the plate, a couple of close calls.  We played aggressively.  That is how we are going to keep on playing,” said Leggett.

Scott Firth got the start for the Tigers and went 6.2 innings giving up eight hits, two runs and one earned run.  Firth had three strikeouts, three walks on 103 pitches.

For the third time this weekend NC State grabbed the lead early as they plated one run in the bottom of the second.

Clemson fought back in the top of the third to tie the game 1-1.  With one out Maleek Gibson reached on a bunt.  Thomas Brittle singled to right.  Jay Baum reached on a fielder’s choice and Brittle was out at second, with Gibson advancing to third.  Steve Wilkerson just beat out a grounder to third to score Gibson.

The Tigers were in position to take the lead in the top of the sixth.  Garrett Boulware led off the inning with a double.  Steven Duggar flied out hard to left center.  Shane Kennedy singled to right and Boulware came around to score but was called out at the plate.  Jon McGibbon flied out to end the threat.

The Pack took the lead in the bottom of the sixth.  A leadoff triple followed by a single put NC State up 2-1.

Clemson threatened again in the seventh.  Tyler Krieger singled to left field.  Maleek Gibson laid down a bunt and Krieger was called out at second.  Brittle was hit by a pitch.  Jay Baum singled to left and Gibson came home but was called out at the plate.  Steve Wilkerson hit one to the warning track but it was caught to end the threat.

NC State added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Clemson fell to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in the ACC with the loss.
