In the 25 years he has been involved in college football, Dabo Swinney says he can never remember the start of training camp being this cool. Through the first two days of practice, his Clemson Tigers have practiced in mostly cloudy conditions with temperatures in the mid-to-low 70s.
“It’s unbelievable. Two beautiful days,” Swinney said. “I think the guys even added to the energy. They know it is going to be a long couple of weeks, but they will take anything they can get at any stage.”
But the weather has had nothing to do with the energy of his players. Swinney says the Tigers have come to camp with a business-like approach and so far there has been no lollygagging from anyone.
“It’s really obvious that we have a bunch of guys that know what they are doing,” Swinney said on Saturday. “There has been a lot of installation yesterday and today – I mean a bunch of stuff. To be able to do that, and not just install it, but guys be able to comprehend it and execute it, that’s pretty impressive.
“As I told them the other night, this is the most veteran team I have had and it ought to show. It ought to show in how we practice, how we meet and everything.”
It seems to be showing in their habits. Swinney says he has been very pleased with his team’s practice habits and how the older players have really set a good tempo on how they are going to practice.
Clemson’s head coach has also been impressed with his freshmen football players as well.
“It’s a very impressive young group,” he said. “I like how this football team looks. I think we have a bunch of guys that can run. You don’t play this game in shorts, but in the two days I have evaluated them, I like what I have seen.”
The players will have Sunday off and will come back and work Monday-Saturday next week which will be capped off with the first scrimmage of the summer next Saturday. On Monday, the Tigers will put on the pads for the first time.
“We will keep going through the process here, but we have had two good days. It’s been a good start,” Swinney said.
