Back When: Peake

The summer recruiting season is in full-swing. Unfortunately, real, live college football is still a couple of months away.

With that in mind, TheClemsonInsider is taking a look back at the recruitment of each returning player on the Clemson roster.

South Carolina got in on the ground floor, offering Peake during his freshman year. Clemson, Maryland, UNC and Georgia were also on board by February of his sophomore year.

Clemson and Georgia were listed as the early favorites, but momentum swung in complete favor of Clemson after he was on campus in September of 2009 for the TCU game. Georgia and Florida were tied for second.

The following spring, Peake visited Clemson several times, including a visit to watch a basketball game against Duke and spring practice stadium scrimmage.

In June, Peake worked out at the first session of the Dabo Swinney Football Camp. The following week, he was back to make an early morning, in-person commitment.

“It just feels like home every time I’m here. I’m really comfortable down here,” Peake said.

Along with South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, Peake also had offers from Southern Cal, LSU, Michigan, Oklahoma and Notre Dame.

Clemson’s 2011 wide receiver class was rounded out by Peake’s teammate, Adam Humphries, plus, five-star Sammy Watkins and holdover Martavis Bryant, who didn’t qualify after initially signing in 2010.

Peake, a consensus four-star prospect, was recruited to Clemson by wide receivers coach Jeff Scott. Peake remained firm with his commitment throughout the rest of the process, never wavering from the pledge.
