In on the ground floor

The summer recruiting season is in full-swing. Unfortunately, real, live college football is still a couple of months away.

With that in mind, TheClemsonInsider is taking a look back at the recruitment of each returning player to the Clemson roster with the Back When series.

Clemson was in on the ground floor with Tankersley, thanks to some diligent work by former offensive coordinator Billy Napier.  An offer from South Carolina eventually followed.

Momentum slowed down before it ever really got rolling and the instate schools were Tankersley’s only offers until spring of his junior year at Silver Bluff High School.

Miami jumped into the mix during the May evaluation period, bringing his total to three. By then, it was too late for the Hurricanes. Clemson was well on the way to the No. 1 spot on Tankersley’s list.

When Napier was let go by Dabo Swinney at the conclusion of the 2010 season, former defensive backs coach Charlie Harbison took over as Tankersley’s primary recruiter.

Clemson remained in good standing and in June of 2011, just after the end of his junior year, Tankersley phoned in a commitment to Dabo Swinney.

“That’s just where I want to go,” Tankersley said. “I don’t want to go anywhere else.”

The four-star prospect held true to the pledge through the end of his recruitment, which included a post-graduate stop at Hargrave Military Academy in the fall of 2012.
