Watson’s only concern is Clemson

It’s July and South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier is worried about what Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson has to say. Deshaun Watson appears to only be concerned about the Clemson Tigers.

Watson spoke with members of the Clemson media during a speaking engagement in Mauldin on Thursday, and a couple of questions were directed to Spurrier’s response to Watson’s comments in a USA Today article that ran in the spring.

Watson said in the article when referring to a conversation he had with his high school coach, that he will not lose to the Gamecocks.

“My high school coach was a big Clemson fan and I told him, as long as I’m the starting quarterback here, I’m not going to lose to South Carolina,” Watson said in the article. “It’s a big rivalry. Who wouldn’t want to play in that game?”

Watson of course ruffled the feathers of a few Gamecock players at the time, but on Wednesday, Spurrier commented on the Clemson quarterback’s quote during his rant with the media.

“We haven’t lost it and we’ve got a dang good team coming,” Spurrier said during his impromptu press conference. “And we’re fired up and we’re gonna be fired up when that team from Clemson comes in the last game of the season. Their quarterback has already challenged our guys. He says we can’t beat him ever. So, we’re looking forward to that challenge also. Maybe this rivalry will get back a little bit like it was several years ago.”

Watson did help the Tigers end USC’s five-year stranglehold on the rivalry with a 35-17 victory in Death Valley last November. Playing on a torn ACL, Watson completed 14 of 19 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns. He also had two one-yard touchdown runs, and made one USC defender look silly when he caused him to miss in the open field to set up one of his two scores.

But Watson chose not to get into the War of Words with Spurrier and the Gamecocks, and instead took the highroad when reporters asked him about what the Ole Ball Coach said.

“Right now I’m just worried about Clemson,” Watson said in a video on The Greenville News Web site. “If that is something he wants to say, then that is on him. Right now, I’m just worried about Clemson.

“That is something I said in high school. I don’t want to tell anyone that I’m not going to lose this game and then not win it. It was something I said in high school. I guess it is what it is.”

Watson did not just answer questions about Spurrier. He also answered questions about being named by the media as the preseason ACC Player of the Year as well as all the hype that has been placed on him and the Tigers for this upcoming season.

“It is pretty cool, but it is something that I’m not really focused on,” he said. “It’s preseason. I’m just worried about Clemson right now and getting my health up and making sure I’m focused on the right things.”

On Tuesday, Clemson was picked by the media that cover the league as the preseason favorite to win the conference.

“That is not my main focus,” Watson said. “Right now, I’m worried about getting healthy and making sure the team is ready for camp … Making sure we are getting ready for Clemson and making sure we have the right players focused on the right things.”

Watson, who according to head coach Dabo Swinney has been cleared to participate in camp, says he is feeling great and has been doing everything the team has been doing this summer. He says he isn’t worried at all about his left knee or his repaired ACL.

“Not at all, I just go out there and play and do what I have done before” he said. “The injury is something that I really cannot control. So I just go out there and keep playing like I have been playing.”

Clemson will open up fall camp on Aug. 4. The 2015 season kicks off at home against Wofford on Sept. 5.
