With Deshaun Watson behind center, Clemson’s hurry-up, no-huddle offense will be in good hands for the next 2-3 years.
The sophomore from Gainesville, Ga. is poised for a monster sophomore year, assuming he’s able to maintain a clean bill throughout the season. Watson, who’s about eight months removed from ACL surgery, will man the quarterback position in 2015, 2016 and, perhaps, one again in 2017.
Waiting in the wings are three scholarship quarterbacks: Nick Schuessler, a redshirt junior, Schuessler enters preseason camp as Watson’s backup. The immediate status of the two freshman, Kelly Bryant and Tucker Israel, will be ironed out in the coming weeks. One could play. One could redshirt. Both could play. Both could redshirt. Only time will tell.
[autotag]Clemson[/autotag] also holds a commitment from 2016 four-star Zerrick Cooper. Just over a week removed from his over-night visit to Florida, there’s a degree of doubt cast over the strength of his pledge. At this juncture, he’s still expected to sign with the Tigers in February, but the Gators have made strong overtures. That won’t slow down until Cooper is ready to give them a firm no, and it appears he’s not quite ready to make that decision, one way or another.
Since last fall’s commitment, Clemson ended its pursuit of other 2016 quarterbacks. Another 2016 edition of the Looking Ahead series could be in order if Cooper continues to reciprocate the interest Florida is sending his way. As is the case with the status of the backups that are already on campus, only time will tell.
Brandon Streeter into the job as quarterbacks coach put a brief pause on the pursuit of a 2017 quarterback. The first 2017 quarterback to net a Clemson offer was four-star lefty Lowell Narcisse, who got the word on the first day of the spring evaluation period. Last month, Narcisse committed to Auburn over LSU and Clemson.
Another four-star, Kellen Mond, picked up his Clemson offer after a multi-day stop for the Dabo Swinney Football Camp. Baylor snapped up his commitment a few weeks later.
The following quarterbacks are among those on the radar as prospects for the Tigers’ 2017 signing class:
[autotag]Jake Bentley[/autotag], Opelika – Opelika, Ala.
Despite early reports, Clemson has yet to pull the trigger on an offer to Bentley, whose dad is on staff at Auburn. With Bobby working for Gus Malzahn, those Tigers are perceived as the team to beat. Bentley camped at Clemson earlier this summer, but did not walk away with an offer.
[autotag]Chase Brice[/autotag], Grayson – Loganville, Ga.
Eleven months ago, TCI believed Cooper was the leader in clubhouse for Clemson’s take at quarterback in 2016. It’s probably safe to go ahead and pencil Brice in as the leading candidate for the 2017 spot. He picked up his Clemson offer after a one-day trip for June’s camp in Tigertown. Several ACC and SEC programs have come forward with offers for the four-star, but the Tigers have staying power.
[autotag]Hendon Hooker[/autotag], Dudley – Greensboro, N.C.
Hooker has claimed an offer from Clemson, but there’s some question as to whether or not he actually possesses one. East Carolina, Syracuse and N.C. A&T have offered.
[autotag]Davis Mills[/autotag], Greater Atlanta Christian – Norcross, Ga.
Mills, another four-star Clemson camper, has several offers, but not one from the Tigers. There are plenty of options for the four-star: Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Miami, Missouri, N.C. State, UNC, Pittsburgh, UCLA and Virginia Tech.
[autotag]Cade Weldon[/autotag], Jefferson – Tampa, Fla.
Like Bentley, Weldon (four-star) showed up for the final day of camp, but did not score an offer from Clemson. Kentucky, Miami, South Carolina, Wake Forest and USF have offered.
