Adjusting on the fly

SIX MILE – For newly hired assistant coach Richie Riley, the last few weeks have been pretty frenetic.

Not that he’s complaining.

“It’s been really hectic,” Riley said on Wednesday, during Brad Brownell’s annual media golf outing, “But it’s a good hectic.”

Before joining the Clemson staff, Riley served as an assistant at UAB, Eastern Kentucky and Coastal Carolina, so he’s used to transitioning from one job to the next.

However, this move has been a little unique.

“Usually, you get a new job (and) it’s in the early spring or summer. You get some time to settle in before you’ve got to hit the road recruiting and things like that,” Riley said. “This, with the timing — I have not (been) in Clemson a ton yet, to get adjusted to the community and things like that. I’ve been on the road recruiting, running around everywhere, but it’s been great. The transition has been unbelievable.

“Everybody since I’ve been here has helped me get adjusted. Whether it’s guys who are on the staff already treating me like family; just Clemson as a whole, the university and the community (have) really embraced me. That makes it easy when you’re around great people everyday.”

Riley was brought on board from UAB after former assistant Earl Grant accepted the head job at The College of Charleston; and he expects to take on many of the same responsibilities Grant had during his tenure at Clemson.

“I think my role on this team — it’s similar to the role I’ve had throughout my career — be that young, energetic guy, (have) a very good relationship with our current players,” Riley said. “Obviously, recruiting is a huge part of my job. It’s important to bring in high-character guys and very talented guys as well…I think recruiting is something that I’m known for, if you talk to people in basketball.

“I take a lot of pride in being a basketball coach. I love coaching on the floor, individual improvement, getting our guys better.”

Since joining the staff three weeks ago, a majority of Riley’s time has been on the road recruiting, in search of Clemson’s next batch of players.

“When you walk into gyms, high schools, wherever and you’ve got this paw on your shirt it means something,” Riley said. “Not only because of the ACC…(Clemson) is an unbelievable product to sell. You’ve got coach Brownell and what he’s been able to do here, he’s an unbelievable player development guy.”

He added, “That’s something we sell in recruiting: It’s an unbelievable culture, coach Brownell has developed a culture in Clemson that’s very attractive to kids, especially the type of kids with the character that we’re going to recruit. It’s very important.

“I think it’s a big advantage to have what we have to sell at Clemson as a university and as a community with coach Brownell.”
