Nation’s top 2018 prospect returns

Five-star quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who’s already ranked by 247sports as the No.1 overall prospect in the class of 2018, visited Clemson on Saturday with his parents.

Lawrence last visited with some of his high school coaches in June, during the Dabo Swinney Football Camp. On Sunday, TheClemsonInsider spoke with his father, Jeremy.

“It was good, good. I’d been there before, many years ago. But nice facilities, impressive staff, so it was worth taking on the weather,” he said.

The Lawrences arrived around 3:30 that afternoon.

“The game’s exciting, but you go early and talk to the coaches and the staff. Really, that’s a bigger part of it for us,” Jeremy said. “The game is exciting and fun, but doing the other stuff — we probably spent as much time out of the rain as we did in it. It was fun.”

They checked into a hotel for the night in Clemson before heading back home to Cartersville, Ga.

“The culture that they have there and the coaching staff, a combination of those two things — the facilities are very nice, but there’s a lot of places that have nice facilities,” Jeremy said. “I was impressed with the staff and the culture they have there. It’s a nice campus. It’s a good feel to it.”

The 6-5, 185-pound quarterback will return to Tennessee next weekend. He was in Knoxville last month for the Oklahoma game. Trips to Georgia and Alabama are also in the works for later this season.

“There are some schools he’s interested in that we’re just not going to make it to this season,” Jeremy said. “We’re not going to, especially since he’s only a sophomore, we’re just not going to go to 12 games.

“We’ll get out in the spring. You can get more quality time with the staff when it’s not game day, but you get some quality staff on game day when you go early, but not so much with the head coach, because they’ve got a full day.”

In four games this season, Lawrence has completed 73 of 105 passes for 990 yards with 12 touchdowns and one interception. He’s also rushed 16 times for 112 yards and a touchdown.
