Matt Bockhorst, a 2017 guard from Cincinnati-St. Xavier, was in Clemson on Saturday for the Georgia Tech game.
Rated as a three-star by Rivals and 247, Bockhorst lists offers from Michigan State, Northwestern, Penn State, Louisville, Boston College, Illinois, Cincinnati, Toledo and Maryland.
Clemson isn’t quite ready to pull the trigger.
“From what I understand, they haven’t completed their 2016 offensive line class, so they don’t know if they’re going to end up with…four or three, whatever the number is — a bunch of tackles or a bunch of inside guys,” Bockhorst said.
The 6-foot-5, 297-pound prospect is OK with that.
“I wasn’t going down there expecting to get the offer,” he said. “It’s kind of wait and see how the 2016 class shakes out, but I’m not in a big hurry to make a decision.”
Saturday’s trip did go well.
“Obviously, it was a little rainy, but it was a ridiculous atmosphere. It was my first time at Clemson for a game. I’d always heard about Death Valley, them coming down that hill and touching that rock, all those things that I heard about,” Bockhorst said. “To experience it in person, it’s on a whole different level.
“Just to see the fans and how crazy they were, how loud the stadium was, with all the rain and conditions, I’m sure it was trivial compared to the week before, but even then, that shows the kind of true loyalty of the fans and the fan-base that Clemson has.”
Bockhorst spent time catching up with Robbie Caldwell, who he got to know in June during his first visit to the school.
“It was great seeing coach Caldwell and talking to the guys on the staff, being able to see those guys again, it was really beneficial and I’m glad I was able to go on the visit,” Bockhorst said.
His brother, Jonathan, is a freshman offensive lineman at Furman, where Caldwell played and once coached.
“He’s a character and you’ll never get bored talking to coach Caldwell. That’s a good thing, so their stock is obviously rising in my book,” Bockhorst said.
So far this season, he’s also been to Penn State and Michigan State. A trip to Notre Dame is scheduled for Saturday.
