In his seven years there, Dabo Swinney has done some things at Clemson that have not been done in a long time.
He led the Tigers to their first ACC Championship in 20 years back in 2011. He also led them to their first 10-win season in 21 years. He guided them to their first BCS bowl victory in 2013, and has beaten College Football heavyweights such as Auburn, LSU, Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Notre Dame over the last four years.
So where does Saturday’s 23-13 victory over No. 16 Florida State rank, especially considering it was the first game the Tigers played as the No. 1 ranked in 34 years? It was the first time they ever played in Death Valley as the No. 1 ranked team, and they clinched the ACC Atlantic Division title with the win.
“It’s right up there. There is no question,” Swinney said on Sunday during his weekly teleconference with the media. “The Atlantic Division Championship is the first step to bigger and better things so this one was big.
“We have clinched the division at other times, but we have never clinched it actually playing Florida State so that was good to punch our ticket to Charlotte, if you will. That was exciting.”
The next step for the Tigers (9-0, 6-0 ACC) is to close out the regular season and then get ready for the ACC Championship Game on Dec. 5 in Charlotte, N.C. If Clemson can maneuver successfully through those four games then a big party will be held in Tigertown on Dec. 6 – a pizza party that is.
“We to have to go to work on that … call oh DJ Sha up and see if we can get something planned,” Swinney said. “But we have to take care of business first, though. That’s for sure. We have to win this week, and then try to win the rest of the games on our schedule and win the championship.
“We have a lot of work to do between now and then, but I hope that can come to fruition and we can have a lot of fun whether it is Death Valley, the indoor or how many people show up on a Sunday at noon to see where the Tigers are going to play. That will be a lot of fun. Again, that is for later.”
Tigers ranked No. 1 in AP. Clemson was voted the No. 1 team in the nation by the Associated Press on Sunday. It marks just the third time in history Clemson has been No. 1 according to the AP poll.
“If we keep winning, maybe we will get there,” Swinney said. “We will see if we can keep it going. We are going to try as hard as we possibly can, I will tell you that.”
Clemson was ranked second in the USA Today Coaches Poll earlier in the day, three spots higher than it was last week.
Clemson, who will visit Syracuse next Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. kick, received 31 first-place votes from the Associated Press on Sunday, 25 more than the Tigers received last week and five more than second-place Ohio State, who had been No. 1 for each of the first 10 weeks of the 2015 season. Dabo Swinney’s team moved from third to first in the poll.
Clemson received 1,489 poll points from the AP voters on Sunday, 29 points ahead of second place Ohio State.
Last Tuesday, Clemson was named the No. 1 team in the nation by the College Football Playoff Committee.
Clemson was voted No. 1 by the Associated Press twice previously, the final two polls of the 1981 season (Nov. 30, 1981 and Jan. 2, 1982).
The unbeatens. The Tigers joins Ohio State, Baylor, Oklahoma State, Iowa and Houston as the only undefeated FBS teams in the nation. Clemson will enter the Syracuse contest with a 12-game winning streak, the second longest active winning streak in the nation.
Only defending National Champion Ohio State has a longer streak with 22 straight wins.
Injury notes. Swinney said he got good reports on both wide receiver Ray Ray McCloud and right guard Tyrone Crowder.
McCloud has a sprained knee, but it will not require surgery. It is just an MCL sprain according to Swinney.
Crowder has turf toe, and should be okay. Swinney said at this time he does not know when either will return.
As for Trevion Thompson, Swinney said the wide receiver should be back in the mix this coming week after sitting out the FSU game with a concussion.
Defensive tackle Jabril Robinson (knee) should also be back after missing the last couple of games.
Center Ryan Norton is now listed as the backup center. Swinney said he was available to play and could have played against the Seminoles, but they did not need him.
