Post-game with Dabo

Clemson narrowly escaped The Carrier Dome with a 37-27 win over Syracuse at The Carrier Dome.

Head coach Dabo Swinney was ready to fly after the Tigers’ 10th win of the season. Here are a few highlights of what he had to say afterwards:

“It’s never easy to win, especially when you go on the road. This is three out of the last four on the road. We didn’t have some of our best stuff tonight…I’m proud of our team, because we made a lot of mistakes, probably enough mistakes to get beat. When you win, I think that’s the sign of a championship football team.”

The troubles in the first half stemmed from the two fumbles. Beyond those, he was pretty pleased.

“We really played well on offense…Deshaun Watson was amazing,” Swinney said.

He added, “They really didn’t have an answer for our perimeter game. Heck of a night, 500 yards, probably could have had 700 if we took care of the ball.”

Clemson lost the turnover margin, 3-1.

Greg Huegel’s three field goals (42, 31, 38) were critical.

“The biggest thing was, defensively, we didn’t have a performance like we’re capable of tonight. We did just enough to win,” Swinney said.

He credited Syracuse’s plan, said the Orange “schemed them up and exposed them in certain areas” with the “triple-option concept” and “made them pay.”

He added, “There’s no excuse for us. We’re a better defense than we were tonight.”

Clemson has five-straight 10-win seasons, which has never happened in school history. The Tigers also have six-straight 500-plus yard games in a row , which has also never happened.
