Inside the numbers: No. 1 Clemson at South Carolina

Here are some numbers to pay attention to as No. 1 Clemson visits South Carolina at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia on Saturday.

 

 

 

2 – Clemson defensive end Shaq Lawson, who was named a finalist for the Nagurski Trophy as the nation’s best defensive player, is ranked second nationally in tackles for loss. Lawson has 19.0 in 11 games this season, an average of 1.8 per game.

3 – Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson ranks third nationally in pass completion percentage. Watson has completed 241 of 344 passes for .701 completion percentage.

7 – Clemson has won seven straight games by double figures. That ties for the longest streak of its kind in Clemson history. The only other team to record seven straight double digit wins was the 2012 team. The Tigers also had a streak of seven straight double digit wins from 1899-1900.

8 – Watson is ranked eighth nationally and leads the ACC with a pass efficiency rating of 161.2.

12 – Clemson comes into the South Carolina game with an 11-0 record. A win over the Gamecocks would mean the Tigers will win a 12th game in one season for the first since the 1981 squad went 12-0 on its way to the national championship.

15 – Clemson has now won 14 straight games, and that is the longest current winning streak in the nation and the longest for the Tigers since 1947-’49. Those Tigers won 15 straight, which Clemson can tie on Saturday with a win over the Gamecocks.

22 – Thanks to last week’s win over Wake Forest, Clemson became just the 23rd program in the history of College Football to record 700 all-time wins. The Tigers stand one win back of Florida and Washington for 20th on the all-time list. The Tigers currently are tied with Arkansas for 22nd on the all-time wins list.

101 – That is the national rank of South Carolina’s offensive yards this year. The Gamecocks are averaging just 358.5 yards per game this season. Clemson’s defense is yielding just 278.2 yards per game, and rank fifth nationally.

107 – Saturday will mark the 107th consecutive year Clemson and South Carolina have played in football. It will move the Palmetto State’s Rivalry into second place all by itself on the list of longest uninterrupted series in college football history.

110 – The Gamecocks are averaging 21.0 points per game, which ranks 110th in the country in scoring. Clemson’s defense is giving up just 17.6 points, which ranks 12th nationally.

113 – Carolina is giving up 206.4 yards per game on the ground this season, which ranks 113th in the country. Clemson’s run game ranks 27th nationally as the Tigers are averaging 212.1 yards per game on the ground.
