No one does it better than Watson

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Nobody knows Deshaun Watson better than Artavis Scott. The Clemson wide receiver has been Watson’s roommate since the two came to Tigertown in the spring of 2014.

The two are best friends on and off the field. They usually stay back after practice and throw footballs. That extra practice has allowed them to both become All-ACC performers, Scott a first-team wide receiver and Watson the ACC Player of the Year.

It also helped the Tigers in Saturday’s ACC Championship Game when the two connected seven times for 96 yards, including a 42-yard pass to set up Clemson’s first touchdown of the night and then later in the third quarter with a 35-yard touchdown pass in its 45-37 victory at Bank of America Stadium.

Though he is a bit bias about his friend, Scott says Watson is the best player in college football and believes he should hoist the Heisman Trophy next week in New York.

“In my opinion he is,” the Tampa, Fla., native said.

Watson definitely looked like it against the Tar Heels. The sophomore completed 26 of 42 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for a career-high 131 yards on 22 carries and scored two touchdowns.

His 420 total yards set an ACC record for total yards, as did his five total touchdowns. It was quite a performance to be added to what has already been a great season for the Gainesville, Ga., native.

“That’s how he has always been and that’s what he does,” Scott said. “When you have a leader like that, in these types of games, he never panics. That’s just great to have.”

Watson never panicked against North Carolina as he guided the Clemson offense to an ACC record 608 yards, including 319 yards on the ground.

Every time the Tar Heels scored and took the lead or just pushed the Tigers, Watson responded with a big play. As mentioned, he threw the 42-yard pass to Scott, found running back Wayne Gallman for a 16-yard touchdown pass.

He had a 33-yard run and later found Scott for a 35-yard touchdown pass. During it all, he led the Tigers on scoring drives of 96 and 97 yards as well as scoring drives of 75 and 80 yards.

“He has been phenomenal. This guy is 70 something completion in the fourth quarter. He has been his best in crunch time, and that’s what great players do. They rise to the occasion when called upon and then they make everyone else better.

“No one has done that better than Deshaun… He is on the only undefeated team in the country, and a big reason why we are the undefeated is because of him.
