More from Shrine Bowl practice

SPARTANBURG – The Clemson presence on South Carolina’s Shrine Bowl roster is relatively small.

Before cornerback Troy Pride was offered by the Tigers on Thursday night, just three members of the 2015 Shrine Bowl squad had offers from Clemson.

The volume may be down, but the players could have a major impact on Saturday’s game at Wofford. Tavien Feaster, South Carolina Mr. Football, is the biggest name.

Coach Wayne Green said he’s the real deal.

“And he’s worked hard…he was a big dog on a great football team and he’s still showing up as a big dog on an all-star team,” Green said, “So I think his future is very bright.”

Green is currently the head coach at Berea, where he’s the winningest coach in school history. He’s also the all-time wins leader at BHP, where he won a state championship.

During practice this week, Green’s spent a lot of time with assistant coach Will Young and the offensive linemen. Nyles Pinckney has been a headache throughout the week.

“We can’t block him,” Green said. “He might be the best defensive lineman that I’ve seen in the last 10 years.

“To look at him, he looks impressive, but he plays even more impressive than what his physical stature says he should be. He’s extremely quick and powerful.”

John Simpson, the team’s starting left tackle, has also impressed.

“He’s going to be a great one. He’s one of those,” Green said. “He’s got great feet and great work ethic. He’s been blessed with tremendous size and he’s been coached up, so he’s going to show up as a pretty good player right now, because he’s had extremely good coaching.”
