What to Watch: Shrine Bowl

A handful of Clemson commitments and recruiting targets are suiting up in the Shrine Bowl on Saturday.

Whether you’re watching in person at Wofford’s Gibbs Stadium or online, via ESPN3, there are some notable match-ups to keep an eye on throughout the game.

North Carolina WRs vs. South Carolina CBs

The Tarheels’ wide receiver corps headlined by Cornell Powell, Diondre Overton and Divine Deablo. During practice this week, Powell got a lot of work out of the slot, backfield and as a motion man, so he may not get as may reps against against South Carolina commitment Chris Smith and Troy Pride. Regardless, Saturday could be a good measuring stick for Pride, who was offered by Clemson on Thursday night.

South Carolina’s blindside

The state of North Carolina has produced a lot of really good defensive linemen over the years. Even if Dexter Lawrence had opted to play in the game, the group of Tarheels was still down, as a unit. The Sandlappers will trot out John Simpson and Cade Stewart at left tackle and left guard. On paper, the duo should be able to clear plenty of space for Tavien Feaster and help provide ample time for the team’s quarterbacks.

Nyles Pinckney vs. Landon Dickerson and Taleni Suhren

Pinckney has been playing out of position all week, working at the 5-technique as a defensive end in the Sandlappers’ 50-front. When he gets to Clemson next month, Pinckney will slide inside to play defensive tackle at the 3-technique. On Saturday, Pinckney will align himself directly across from the offensive tackles. He’ll draw matchups with Suhren, a Wake Forest commitment, and Dickerson, who’s being pursued by Auburn, Florida State and others.
