Clemson shows interest in Savannah DB

Before the start of Christmas break, Clemson defensive backs coach Mike Reed reached out to the coaches at Jenkins High School in Savannah, Ga.

Reed let them know that Clemson was interested in three-star running back Arkeem Byrd. The Tigers like the 6-1, 190-pound prospect as a safety.

No offer was made, but the topic was discussed.

“We talked about it and he was going to get back to me after they win the national championship,” Byrd said. “(Reed) was going to talk it over with my family and my coach. Whenever he tells me to come join them, that’s when I’ll know.”

In the fall, Byrd took official visits to Colorado State and Minnesota. He’s scheduled to visit Tennessee in two weeks.

Clemson will have him on campus for an official, if he’s invited.

“They’re not too far from home and I also heard it’s got a home feeling,” Byrd said. “It’s not too big and it has got that home feeling, everybody knows each other and everybody supports each other. It’s a small town and they just support their athletics there.

“They’ve got a great fan-base and Clemson has great tradition, like running down the hill and stuff like that. It’s a tradition school. They show pride in their program. Of course, they’re No. 1 in the nation right now with great coaches and great athletes.”

He added, “The head coach, Dabo Swinney, he seems like a players’ coach with his dancing. I think that’s cool.”

As a senior, Byrd rushed for 1,220 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also had 24 tackles.
