GREENVILLE — Matt Jones’ game-tying three-pointer from the left corner bounced off the side of the rim with 1.8 seconds to play and right into the arms of Clemson’s Avery Holmes, securing the Tigers’ 68-63 victory over No. 9 Duke on Wednesday at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville.
“To me, I don’t think the last possession means that much or as much as the other possessions in the game,” Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “You have to hit a three to tie and that’s not where the game was won or lost. The games was won or lost at the other half trying to get defensive rebounds a couple of times.”
For good measure Holmes made both free throws on the other end as the Tigers improved to 4-1 in the ACC and 11-6 overall. It was Clemson’s four straight win and second straight over a top 25 team. Clemson beat No.16 Louisville last Saturday.
It is the first time Clemson has beaten top-25 teams in consecutive games since 1989 when the Tigers ended the ACC regular season.
“That was another big win for us,” Clemson head coach Brad Brownell said. “It was exciting in some ways because we had so many guys make plays at the end of the game to get it done. It just wasn’t one player.”
Clemson put the pressure on the Blue Devils to make a game-tying three when Jordan Roper waited for a double team, drove the lane and found Jaron Blossomgame for a massive dunk with 13.3 seconds to play. Blossomgame’s slam gave the Tigers a 66-63 lead at the time.
“You have to get a stop there,” Krzyzewski said. “They are going to matchup with our three-pointers shooters and give up only a two so I would have rather had the ball come to the other side and have Luke (Kennard) or Grayson (Allen) take it, but I don’t fault them for that.
“(Clemson) put good pressure on it. They played really good defense on it.”
Duke (14-3, 3-1 ACC) led by as many as eight points in the second half, 48-40, but Clemson quickly rallied and eventually tied the game at 50-50 when Donte Grantham hit a three from the wing with 8:15 to play. That followed a three-point play by Grantham that cut the lead to one, 48-47.
With the game tied, Blossomgame gave the Tigers a 53-50 lead, their first since the score was 5-2 early in the first half, with a three-pointer in the left corner.
The Tigers extended the lead to 62-55 with 2:52 to play as Roper drained a three from the left side and then followed a Holmes miss layup, which brought the crowd to their feet.
Roper had seven points and a career-high nine assists in the game.
Duke had a chance to tie the game with 1:45 to play when Jones was fouled on the way up on a made layup. But he missed the game-tying free throw. On Clemson’s ensuing possession, center Landry Nnoko made a layup on an assist from Blossomgame to put the Tigers back up three points, 64-61, with 59 seconds to play.
The Blue Devils finished the game just 2-for-7 from the foul line.
“Obviously, our free throw shooting was not good,” Krzyzewski said. “We were 2-for-7. We were up 48-40 and can compete a three-point play and then a one-and-one. Again, I’m not blaming them, you miss. But to win a game like this … They hit their free throws. That’s what I mean. There are a bunch of other things besides the last play, I think.”
Clemson got the Blue Devils in serious foul trouble in the second half as Brandon Ingram, Marshall Plumlee and Chase Jeter all picked up four fouls by the 10-minute mark. Jeter fouled out shortly thereafter.
The Tigers trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half as Duke built a 28-16 lead with under eight minutes to play. The Blue Devils made six of their first eight three-pointers to build the lead. But Clemson outscored them 17-7 to cut the Duke lead to 35-33 at the break.
“I told our guys at halftime that we were not playing that well, and we were only down two,” Brownell said. “We were a little too hyped up. We had a couple of defensive mistakes and sometimes that happens when you are energized. Your focus goes because you are just so hyped up.
“We missed a couple of switches and made some defensive mistakes. When you play Duke that way they capitalize. I thought we regrouped at halftime, kind of got our whits together and just played a good second half.”
Clemson was led by Blossomgame’s 17 points, 11 of which came in the second half. Grantham scored 16 points on 6 of 13 shooting, including 3 of 6 from behind the arc. The Tigers shot 45.5 percent from the field.
“I’m really proud of our guys for executing down the stretch and winning it,” Brownell said.
Landry Nnoko was dominant under the basket as he totaled 12 points and 13 rebounds. He also had four blocked shots. The Tigers had seven overall.
Nnoko also had five offensive rebounds.
“Nnoko gave them a couple of extra possessions that were big,” Krzyzewski said. “He is a real man out there.”
Clemson will play No. 8 Miami on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Well.
