The definition of team player

Roderick Byers is the definition of a team player. The senior from Rock Hill, S.C. came to Clemson as the No. 31 defensive end in the nation according to ESPN, but Byers was required to utilize his versatility as an athlete in his five years as a Tiger.

After redshirting in the 2011 season, Byers spent the majority of his time as a reserve defensive tackle. In three seasons, he recorded 28 tackles and a tackle for loss in 204 snaps over 14 games.

However, Byers’ first career start was actually at the tight end position. In 2014, Clemson was struggling with depth on the offensive line and at the tight end position due to various injuries. In an attempt to aid the line, Byers became a member of the offense and started contributing as a fullback/H-back.

The position swap occurred early in October of 2014, so Byers played on both the defensive and offensive side of the ball in the same season. His debut as a tight end at Clemson came against Boston College, but his first career start was against Georgia State later in the season.

With the strength of the offensive line intact and the growth of the tight end position, Byers was able to return to the position that he was truly passionate about in 2015. He was especially happy to be able to play his final season as a Tiger on the defensive side of the ball.

“Now on defense, I appreciate this opportunity because I get to do what I love to do,” Byers said when he made the switch back to defensive tackle. “I just missed defense.”

Byers’ return to the defense also came around the time that veteran defensive tackle D.J. Reader decided to step away from football due to personal reasons. This made Byers’ move critical for building the depth at defensive line.

In the 2015 season, Byers played in all 15 games, racking up 17 tackles, one tackle for loss and a pass break up. Byers was recognized along with his fellow seniors at the Wake Forest game as a member of the winningest senior class in Clemson history.
