Both of Clemson’s starting safeties are off to the NFL and there are four potential replacements on the roster.
T.J. Green finished second on the team with 95 tackles. Jayron Kearse was tied for fourth with 62 tackles. He also had an interception.
Two of their backups, Van Smith and Jadar Johnson, totaled 19 and 15 tackles, respectively. Jeff Gibson, who just transferred out of the program, was credited with six.
Clemson also had a pair of safeties that took redshirts in 2015.
Korrin Wiggins, the starting nickel back during his first two years at Clemson, was lost for the season with a torn ACL during preseason camp. Wiggins’ camp work before the injury was primarily at safety, and he could be the leader at the position in 2016.
Tanner Muse fits the big safety profile that Clemson with Kearse, Green and Gibson. Listed around 220 pounds, Muse played a lot of free safety during scout team work in 2015.
Clemson holds a commitment from Nolan Turner, an unranked prospect from Alabama, who was going to join the Crimson Tide as a walk-on, before Dabo Swinney offered last week.
Other safety prospects still on the Tigers’ 2016 board include Isaiah Simmons (Olathe, Kan.), Romeo Finley (Niceville, Fla.) and Daniel Thomas (Birmingham, Ala.).
