Clemson’s brand lands secondary stars

When he spoke with ESPN’s Jeannine Edwards on Tuesday night, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney told her Trayvon Mullen’s decision on National Signing Day could go either way.

It went Clemson’s way.

Mullen, a four-star cornerback from Coconut Creek High School in Florida, chose Clemson over LSU and Florida State on Wednesday morning. Louisville and TCU also received official visits from Mullen.

“We are losing a great, great corner also from Florida in Mackensie Alexander, who is going to be a great pro,” Swinney told Edwards on ESPN’s signing day show. “To be able to go back down to Florida and get a young man like Trayvon Mullen, who is one of the best in the country. He is a long corner. It is really hard to find guys that have the coverage skills and the length that he has to be able to match up with those big receivers like Mike Williams, if you will.”

Swinney said Mullen was a big, big get for the Tigers, who lost five defensive backs to either the NFL or to transfer. Alexander, along with safeties Travis Blanks, Jayron Kearse and T.J. Green decided to forgo their senior seasons to enter the NFL Draft.

Also, safety Jefferie Gibson announced a few weeks back he was leaving Clemson to transfer to another school.

Mullen is the No. 18 overall player in the country according to ESPN’s top 300 and is rated as the No. 2 cornerback in the country.

“It was crazy because we were not recruiting DBs coming into this cycle,” Swinney said. “We did not have a single senior. When you are a head coach and you are managing the numbers, you just can’t go out and offer guys scholarships because you have to plan that everyone is coming back.”

Clemson signed K’Von Wallace on Tuesday as well. The Highland Springs, Va. cornerback is part of three defensive backs in the Tigers’ 2016 class.

Isaiah Simmons, a four-star safety from Olathe, Kan., committed on Tuesday night to Clemson and is expected to send in his paper work this morning. Nolan Turner of Vestavia Hills, Ala. was the first.

“What we are going to sign today in our secondary, it shows the power of our brand,” Swinney said. “We had not recruited people all year and then we get into it late. We swooped in and people are interested enough to come see Clemson, and we all know that if people come to see Clemson they are going to love it.

“It shows the strength of our brand.”
