Clemson recruiting: The fun is in the brand

The fun is in the winning, or at least that’s what Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney likes to say. And though that is true, the fun at Clemson starts way before the Tigers wrap up a victory on a Saturday afternoon in Death Valley.

“One thing I enjoy, and we talk about it each week in our staff room. We talk with Coach Swinney and he says to make sure you are having fun and that your kids are having fun,” recruiting coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter said.

Having fun in all parts of the operation, whether it is in the team meetings, position meetings, workouts, practices or team functions, are reasons why Clemson has become one of the top 5 winning-est programs in the country over the last five years. It has also played a major role in why the Tigers have singed back-to-back top five classes and six straight top 15 classes.

Swinney has become an internet sensation and is one of the more popular trending figures on Twitter and Facebook due to his enthusiasm on the sidelines, his end of the game passion while being interviewed following a big win and his post-game dance moves in the locker room.

“Ya’ll have seen it and a lot of it stems from Coach Swinney,” Streeter said. “The fun that he has and what he brings to this program, it really moves throughout the program. We have a blast at practice. We have a blast after games.”

These are all reasons on why Clemson was able to sign defensive backs Trayvon Mullen, Isaiah Simmons and K’Von Wallace as last-minute gets on National Signing Day. It also played a big role in landing five-star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, five-star linebackers Shaq Smith and Tre Lamar, and running back Tavien Feaster.

“When kids see that on the news, it definitely helps. It helps build that momentum you are looking for and that is what we have been able to do with some of these 2017 kids that we have committed already,” Streeter said.

“What we did this year, and not just winning, but it enhanced our brand. Everybody that has been here in the past, whether it is recruits or other coaches, they know how strong this brand is. It enhanced our brand by winning and showing people how we do win.”
