Top OT enjoys return to Clemson

Four-star Trey Smith is one of the top remaining offensive line targets for Clemson’s 2017 class.

The Tigers already have four commits: Cade Stewart (Central), Noah DeHond (Rochester, N.Y.), Matt Bockhorst (Cincinnati) and Blake Vinson (Citra, Fla.).

Smith, who’s from Jackson, Tenn., visited Clemson with DeHond, Bockhorst and Vinson for last month’s Junior Day.

“It was awesome going down to Clemson again this time, not for a game. That was pretty cool,” Smith said.

Clemson had him on campus in the fall for the Florida State game.

This visit allowed Smith (6-5, 290) to have more face time with the Clemson coaches.

“Definitely helped a lot. During games, they’re sort of busy getting players prepped and stuff,” he said. “Spending a full day with them sort of led to see what type of people they are. I got to know them a little better. We got an in-depth campus and facility tour this time.”

Smith arrived on Friday. He stayed with Sean Pollard and spent time with Jake Fruhmorgen and Zach Giella. Bockhorst and Vinson were around, too.

“That was really cool getting to know them. Of course, Matt and Blake both committed…I thought that was awesome,” Smith said.

Five-star quarterback commitment Hunter Johnson has been in touch, dating back to his time as a Tennessee commitment. The nation’s No. 1 quarterback was also in Clemson for Junior Day.

“We were able to talk a little bit. He actually DM-ed me and was letting me know this class could be something really special,” Smith said. “I think Clemson is definitely a special place. I think Matt and Blake are going to recruit me pretty hard — also Sean. I went to The Opening with him. That’s my guy. I’m going to stay with him every time I go to Clemson now.”

Smith stopped by Georgia a day after he was in Clemson, to meet with the Dawgs’ new staff. A trip to Tennessee is in the works for later this month. Visits Notre Dame and Ohio State are also on the horizon.

A decision isn’t expected anytime soon. Smith would like to take some officials before he reaches a decision.

According to 247, Smith is the No. 5 overall offensive tackle in the class of 2017.
