Smith talks Junior Day

Depending who you ask, OrTre Smith is somewhere among the top three players in South Carolina for the class of 2017.

According to 247, he’s the best. Rivals lists him second. ESPN ranks Smith third.

The four-star from Wando High School visited Clemson last month for Junior Day.

“I enjoyed myself very much,” Smith told TheClemsonInsider.

What stood out?

“We put on the jerseys and it was fun. I was excited about that. And how (Dabo Swinney) explained what we were going to get at Clemson, I really liked it. It just explained to me how (and) what I would get myself into. It really opened my mind on things.”

Smith (6-3, 210) is familiar with the campus — he took multiple visits in 2015, including the Orange and White game and the Dabo Swinney Football Camp.

At the Junior Day event, there was plenty that stood out to Smith, whose mom played volleyball at Clemson.

“Just to compete. Because, even if they’re booked at positions, nobody’s guaranteed a spot,” Smith said. “If you show you’ve got what it takes to start, then you play. They don’t just choose just to choose. If you have the talent, you’ll play.

“That stood out a lot. And the academics part. They’re really strict on academics and graduating. That stood out.”

South Carolina will host Smith this weekend for junior day. Georgia’s is next weekend.

Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville, South Carolina, Tennessee and Wake Forest have offered.

“I’m still in the process. Probably, at the end of the school — spring time, I might have a list then,” Smith said. “Right now, I’m just enjoying everything, the process and everything.”

Several factors will be considered.

“I’m going to be looking for a place where I can come in and contribute right away — just (if) I fit in, like I feel almost home and the way they treat the players,” Smith said. “I want a coach that’s going to be real with me…that’s what I’m looking for, too.”
