It took Jaron Blossomgame four years to score 1,000 points in high school, yet he needed just three seasons in college to reach that personal milestone. So was getting to 1,000 points easier while playing in the ACC as opposed to Class AAA basketball in Georgia?
“I don’t know,” Blossomgame said smiling.
Regardless, Blossomgame went over the 1,000-point mark in his career during Clemson’s 66-52 victory over Georgia Tech on Saturday. The Tigers’ leading scorer needed 15 points to reach the milestone and he scored 17.
“It is pretty special,” the junior said.
Blossomgame is special. In six of the last eight games, he has scored at least 20 points, including 30 earlier this week against Notre Dame. Coming into the Georgia Tech game, he was averaging 19.3 points per game in ACC play, the highest figure by a Tiger since Will Solomon averaged 21.3 during the 1999-2000 season.
“Jaron has done it in not quite three years. That is what is remarkable,” Clemson head coach Brad Brownell said about Blossomgame reaching 1,000 points. “It speaks to his development. It speaks to his work. It speaks to his improvement and his dedication to his craft. He is a guy that we have leaned on heavily this year and he has been able to deliver. I’m really happy for him and proud of him and I’m sure we will recognize him at our next home game.”
Though Blossomgame did not have his best game on Saturday, the Yellow Jackets (13-12, 3-9 ACC) had a hard time matching up with him. Blossomgame was just five of 16 from the field, but he got to the foul line seven times and he made all seven. He also grabbed seven rounds in the victory.
Early on Georgia Tech tried to match him up its bigs against Blossomgame, but Charles Mitchell, James White and Ben Lammers were no match. By the end of the game they had forward Quinton Stephens on him.
“I have my speed. That’s an advantage I have, and being able to shoot the ball,” Blossomgame said. “I can drive around bigger guys. I just have to be aware when I have a big guy on me or a smaller guy like Stephens, being able to drive or someone I have to post up.”
The good news for Clemson and Blossomgame is that he did not have to do it all by himself on Saturday. Four other players scored at least eight points, including Jordan Roper’s 15 points on six of 13 shooting from the field. Roper needs just 60 points to reach 1,000 points.
“It was good. Landry (Nnoko) helped us out early in the first half. He had a couple of hook shots and Jordan came on late and made some shots,” Blossomgame said. “Donte played well also. Avery (Holmes) came down the stretch and made some free throws. It was definitely good to have more guys step up and make plays on the offensive end.”
Clemson will look for win No. 9 in the ACC on Wednesday when it hosts Boston College at 7 p.m. at the Bon Secure Wellness Arena in Greenville.
