Five-star athlete Devon Hunter was among the group of highly-rated prospects in Clemson last month for Junior Day.
According to Scout, he’s the fifth-best in the class of 2017 and the No. 3 ranked athlete.
TheClemsonInsider recently caught up with the 6-foot-2, 205-pound prospect from Chesapeake, Va. who’s being recruited to Clemson as a safety.
“Overall, it was a great experience,” Hunter said of his first trip to Tigertown.
“I learned a lot more about the school. In addition to seeing Clemson, I was able to build great bonds with the coaches there, because I hadn’t really met them yet…I enjoyed myself.”
What stood out?
“They’re really close there. They’re a big, close family. Not just on the field, but people off the field, too. Just being there, I’d get the right education I need and the right people around me to be successful.”
With the high turnover rate at safety this offseason and at least one more on the way at the end of 2016, Hunter recognizes the opportunity for early playing time at Clemson.
“Just coming in there and playing for a program like that, especially playing early, that would be a huge deal for me,” he said. “I just have to keep working at it and anything can happen.”
Hunter will visit UNC on Wednesday and he’s scheduled to visit Virginia Tech on the 27th. He’ll return to Clemson later this spring for practice or the Orange and White game.
Most of the country’s major programs have offered, but he’s still weighing all of his options. There are no leaders nor is there a list of favorites.
A decision date is also up in the air.
“I was thinking about doing it at the beginning of this season coming up,” Hunter said, “But my mind could change at any time, so I’m not sure yet.”
As a junior, Hunter had 91 tackles, 12 pass breakups and three interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns. He also scored three touchdowns on the offensive side of the ball.
