The Wayne Train is about to get back on the tracks for what’s probably going to be one last run at Clemson.
This Monday, Wayne Gallman and the 2016 Tigers open spring practice. He’ll probably have a relatively light work load over the next few weeks. That shouldn’t be the case for Gallman’s former Grayson High School teammates, Nick Schuessler and Ryan Carter.
Mickey Conn, their former high school coach, who played with Dabo Swinney at Alabama, recently spoke to TheClemsonInsider about his trio of former players.
“I’m proud of all three of them and what they’ve accomplished,” Conn said. “Wayne Gallman, I am so proud of him and the way he has become a premier back and a national back threat.
“I know how hard he runs and how hard he works, how much heart and passion he has for the game, and the talent that he has — I’m grateful that he gets to use that and show the country what I got to see in high school.
Gallman has already written his legacy as one of the most prolific single-season rushers in Clemson history. Obviously, he’s not done with his chapter, because most folks have tabbed him as someone who should have already left for the NFL.
Schuessler continues to live life as a reserve quarterback behind one of the best in the country. This spring is big for him and the other guys fighting for the job to be Deshaun Watson’s backup in 2016.
Carter emerged as a nickel corner last season. Now, with the departure of Mackensie Alexander to the NFL, he could get a serious look as a potential replacement in the starting 11.
“I’m really proud of him, especially the way he played in that semifinal game (against Oklahoma). He was unbelievable, had a great year,” Conn said. “(I’m) so proud of those boys and hope they keep improving and getting better and get a ring for Clemson.”
