Clemson’s contact with Summie Carlay began about a week after South Carolina pulled the trigger on an offer.
That was offer No. 1 for the 6-foot-5, 280-pound 2017 offensive tackle from Laurens. He’ll head up to Clemson this Saturday for the Tigers’ second Junior Day event of 2016.
“I would say I’m looking forward to meeting the coaching staff the most,” Carlay said. “I’ve heard a lot of great things about coach (Dabo) Swinney and coach (Dan) Brooks and coach (Jeff) Scott. I can’t wait to meet them in person.”
Whether or not Clemson pulls the trigger on an offer this weekend is an unknown, and that suits him just fine.
“I don’t want to predict anything — I just want to go and enjoy the visit and just soak in everything,” Carlay said, “Because the recruiting process only comes around one time and I don’t want to spend my time worrying about who’s going to offer and that kind of thing.”
His last visit to Clemson was in 2013 when an assistant from Laurens took him and a few teammates to the Georgia Tech game.
“I just remember it being extremely loud,” Carlay said. “It was a night game, too, so it was extra exciting. Thursday night football, primetime — I’ve been to several other Clemson games, because we have several friends that are Clemson grads. I’ve been to a lot of them.
“It’s just a special atmosphere. It’s hard to put a finger on it — it’s really a great atmosphere.”
In addition to his trip to South Carolina earlier this year, Carlay went to NC State last weekend and picked up an offer from the Wolfpack. Virginia invited him to visit for Saturday’s junior day, but he’d already made plans to see Clemson.
