Alexander makes case as best DB in draft

At least in Mackensie Alexander’s eyes, the NFL scouts left Clemson’s Pro Day on Thursday with a big fat smile on their faces.

“They definitely left with smiley faces and stuff like that so I’m happy about that,” Alexander said after working out in front of all 32 NFL teams at Clemson’s Indoor Practice Facility.

Alexander left smiling, too. The former Clemson cornerback performed well as he participated in the 40-yard dash, the 20-yard shuttle, the 60-yard shuttle, the three-cone drill and the on-field drills.

“The goal is to find out everything they don’t know and check everything off,” he said. “My hands were a question, my speed was a question and I checked both of them off today.

“I have good speed and I have good hands and I showcased that today. I looked really well in drills. It was a pressing day. It was definitely a big day for me and I did well so I’m happy with that.”

Alexander showed off his speed by running somewhere between a 4.4-4.5 in the 40. Unofficially, NFL scouts clocked him at 4.4 and 4.45. He also ran a 7.06 in the three-cone drill and a 12-flat in the 60-yard shuttle. The most impressive thing about Alexander’s day was the 37.5-inch vertical he displayed.

“For me, I do what I do. This is nothing new to me,” he said. “I’m just happy to be out here competing with my teammates and being able to be healthy and finish healthy, walking off with no limp and nothing hurting.

“Just fighting to get healthy was my biggest concern. It was not competing. I’m going to do that naturally, but being healthy was my biggest concern and today was a big day for me and I finished well. I’m happy about that. My body held up.”

Alexander, who injured his hamstring in the national championship game on Jan. 11, did not compete in the combine two weeks ago because his body was not totally ready. Thursday’s pro day was about showing the scouts, coaches, head coaches and general managers in attendance what he could do.

The 5-foot-10, 190-pound cornerback says he has spoken with every NFL team, but in between drills he spent a lot of time talking with Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. The Steelers also had President Dan Rooney on hand as well as defensive backs coach Carnell Lake and two other scouts.

Reportedly, Tomlin had a lengthy interview with Alexander during the NFL Combine, which he followed with his first visit to Clemson’s Pro Day.

Alexander also had a lengthy conversation after the Pro Day with Indianapolis Colts head coach Chuck Pagano, who was one of Edgerrin James’ coaches at the University of Miami. James and Alexander are both products of Immokalee High School in South Florida.

“He kind of understands the background, where I come from and how I do things so that was just a blessing for him to just want to sit down and talk for a little bit about football and who I am as a person,” Alexander said.

Alexander said he put everything he had into competing on Thursday, which in his mind proves he is the best cornerback in the country.

“I have the want to. The will do things, compete. If you watch me out there, you can see I put my heart and soul into the drills, running and do everything I have done, which was phenomenal. I don’t think anybody expected me to come out here and run the way I did,” he said. “Some teams thought I was slower, but I proved them wrong today.

“I’m happy with the result I had at the end of the day. I’m happy just to be healthy. I’m happy that I finished healthy.”
