WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Seth Beer hit two home runs for No. 20 Clemson and picked up four RBIs in the process as Clemson downed Wake Forest, 6-5, to even the three-game series on Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Beer put the game away in the top of the seventh inning when he blasted a two-run shot to left field that gave the Tigers a 6-3 lead at the time. It was his second home run of the afternoon.
The true freshman, who now has six home runs overall and three in the last two games, hit a solo shot to left center field in the second inning. That gave the Tigers (10-3, 1-1 ACC) a 1-0 lead at the time.
Wake Forest (11-5, 1-1 ACC) jumped on the Tigers for three runs to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning. The three runs ended the day for starter Clate Schmidt, who had pitched masterfully through three starts for the Tigers until Saturday’s struggles.
Clemson head coach Monte Lee relieved Schmidt with Pat Krall. Schmidt went 2.2 innings and gave up four hits, three runs and three earned runs in the no-decision.
Krall, who got the win, was impressive once again in relief as he went five innings and gave up two runs on five hits.Alex Bostic finished it off for the Tigers to earn his second save of the season.
Clemson began its rally in the top of the fifth inning as Chase Pinder got things started with a one-out walk. Reed Rohlman then singled to left to advance Pinder to third and later move to second on a balk. Chris Okey then hit a grounder to third base, but the third baseman came home on the fielder’s choice, but Pinder slid under the tag for the Tigers’ second run. Beer then brought Rohlman home with a sac fly to tie the game at three.
Clemson took the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning. Eli White hit a ball down the right field line, and Robert Jolly singled up the middle. Maleeke Gibson then reached on a fielder’s choice causing Jolly to be put out at second, while advancing to third base. White later scored on a wild pitch for a 4-3 lead.
Beer then came through again in the top of the seven inning with his two-run homer to put the Tigers up 6-3. In the bottom of the eighth the Deacons got two runs on a two-out single to cut the lead to 6-5.
The rubber match in the three-game series is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.
