Instant Replay: Clemson 9, Furman 7

GREENVILLE — The Clemson Insider takes a look back at No. 14 Clemson’s 9-7 win over Furman on Tuesday night at Fluor Field in Greenville.

 

 

 

 

 

What happened?

The Tigers (18-6) got on the board first as Drew Wharton hit an RBI single to score Reed Rohlman who had reached on a HBP. The Paladins answered in the third as they used four hits and a Clemson error to take a 4-1 lead. The Tigers bounced back in the fourth to tie the game on K.J. Bryant’s first career homer, a three-run shot to tie the game. Furman re-took the lead with a run in the fourth to make it 5-4. Clemson regained the lead in the sixth on a RBI from Chris Okey and a Reed Rohlman RBI double, but the Paladins again answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to take a 7-6 lead. The Tigers would tie the game in the seventh on a RBI single from Eli White. Clemson would then plate single runs in the eighth and ninth on wild pitches to take home the 9-7 midweek win.

Game-Changing Moment:

The game changed in the fourth inning as Bryant’s first homer as a Tiger would tie the game and get Clemson back in it after Furman (10-14) had scored four unearned runs to take the lead in the previous half inning.

 

What went right?

Chase Pinder and Rohlman each had two hits to lead the seven-hit attack while all nine starters drew at least one walk for a total of 13 in the game. Pat Krall had a great relief outing, throwing 3.2 scoreless innings with three hits and a walk against three strikeouts.

What went wrong?

Offensively, the Tigers seemed to scuffle most of the night as they only had seven hits and struggled in some clutch situations as they stranded 14 runners in the contest (including eight in scoring position). Defensively, two costly errors led to five unearned runs in the game.
