Clemson’s recruiting “train” is rolling along in Texas

Two days after the Tigers offered 2018 cornerback Anthony Cook from Houston (Lamar), fellow Texas product Atanza Vongor was the recipient of Clemson’s latest offer on Friday.

Vongor, a 2018 safety from South Grand Prairie High School, provided The Clemson Insider with the details.

“Clemson offered today after spring practice,” Vongor said last night. “Coach Mike Reed came out to our spring practice, got to see me play and I was also able to talk with him tonight over the phone.

“He just talked about my skill set, said he loved the way I play. He wanted to get to know me a little … He talked about being completely honest about their program and me making a decision (not just solely based on) football.”

Reed certainly made an impression on Vongor during the visit.

“Coach Reed really seems to care for his players, even past football,” Vongor said. “If the coaching is like that, then I love that.”

Vongor, who also has offers from Baylor, Michigan, Texas, Texas A&M and TCU, among others, said the consistent success Clemson has had in recent years is something that sticks out to him.

“They sound like a great program,” he said. “I know they did great this past year and in past seasons. I like the look on defense, but I have to look into them more.”

A long, lean, physical and rangy player listed at 6-foot-1 and 192 pounds, Vongor fits the mold of safety that Clemson likes to target.

“I can play pass well, and I also like to come downhill and bring the hit,” Vongor said. “I can also play nickel, like a hybrid-type safety.

“On the offensive side of the ball, I play quarterback and a little running back. I can make plays with the ball in my hand, so that’s what I try to do.”

Vongor said he doesn’t yet have any set plans for the summer, but intends on visiting Clemson in the future.

“Coach Reed talked about getting me up there to visit,” Vongor said. “He should be getting that set up. I’d love to go out there and visit.”
