The Clemson Insider takes a look back at No. 23 Clemson’s win over Georgia Southern on Sunday afternoon at J.I. Clements Stadium in Statesboro, Ga.
What happened?
The Tigers (34-18) took an early lead with a four-run second inning, highlighted by a three-run homer by Chris Williams. The Eagles (31-22) would get a run back in the bottom of the frame to make it 4-1 but Clemson would blow the game open in the fifth with six runs. Eli White drove two runs in with a single and Chris Okey hit a three-run homer to cap the scoring for the inning. Georgia Southern would score three runs in the sixth to make it 10-4 but again the Tigers would respond with two runs on a Weston Wilson homer. Clemson would end the game with a five-run ninth inning, highlighted by a two-run homer from Andrew Cox to take the series.
Game-Changing Moment:
The game changed in the fifth inning as the Tigers turned a close contest into a blowout with six runs on four hits and an Eagle error.
What went right?
Eight different players had hits in Clemson’s 11-hit attack, led by two each from Chase Pinder, Okey, and Williams. The Tigers were effective as well, taking advantage of eight walks and only stranding four runners. All three Tiger pitchers did a nice job as Ryley Gilliam tossed 5.2 innings to pick up his third win before Brooks Crawkford (one run in 2.1 innings) and Alex Bostic (1.0 scoreless innings) closed it out.
What went wrong?
Clemson played a pretty solid game all around so not much went wrong on Sunday. However, the Tigers did strike out nine times in the contest.
