Instant Replay: Clemson 5, Wake Forest 4

DURHAM, N.C. — The Clemson Insider takes a look back at Clemson’s win over Wake Forest on Saturday in the ACC Baseball Championships at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, N.C.

What happened?

The Demon Deacons (34-25) struck first with a single run in the second before the Tigers (41-18) tied it up on a Mike Triller RBI double in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the frame, Wake Forest scored three runs on five hits to take a 4-1 lead. Clemson would battle back in the seventh to tie the game as Triller led the inning off with a solo homer and Chase Pinder followed with a two-run bomb to tie it up. In the eighth, the Tigers would load the bases and the eventual game-winning run would come in to score on a wild pitch with two strikes and two outs.

Game-Changing Moment:

The game changed in the top of the seventh inning. The Demon Deacons pulled their starter to begin the inning and Clemson wasted little time in greeting the reliever. Triller’s homer started the frame and a walk to pinch-hitter Jordan Greene before Pinder’s monster blast got the Tigers off the mat as they would carry the newfound momentum into the eighth inning where they would plate the winning run.

What went right?

Patrick Andrews was sensational out of the bullpen with 3.1 scoreless innings of two-hit ball while Pat Krall earned his 10th win with 2.1 scoreless innings. Clemson made their seven hits count with five extra base hits, including two from Triller. Both Triller and Pinder each drove in two runs while the defense made some nice plays in the field.

What went wrong?

The Tigers wasted several scoring chances early and stranded 11 runners in the contest, including leaving the bases loaded twice. Clemson seemed flat out of the gate and struggled against starter Drew Loepprich, but the two long balls off the Wake closer got the team back into the game.
