Jonathan Doddridge played high school football against Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables in Kansas, and last Wednesday, Doddridge got to watch Venables coach his son Jacob at the Dabo Swinney Football Camp for the second straight year.

Jacob is a linebacker in the 2018 class from Carroll High School in Southlake, Texas, and he participated in two of the three practice sessions Wednesday.

Jonathan was also a linebacker. While at Salina Central High School in the late 80s and early 90s, Jonathan faced Venables, who went to Salina South High.

Jonathan went on to play baseball at Baylor, and Jacob said his dad has taught him a lot about competition.

“He’s taught me to be competitive in everything I do,” Jacob said, “and use all of my talents to the best of my ability.”

Jacob, a physical player with strong work ethic, is getting interest from Clemson, Baylor, Florida State, Kansas State, Northwestern and Texas Tech.

Jacob had a nice experience at the Swinney Camp.

“It went really well,” Jacob said. “I enjoyed being around coach Venables. I enjoyed the one-on-ones, and it was neat that (Ben) Boulware was there giving tips. I learned a lot of helpful things with my footwork and stance.”

Should Clemson offer, it would be in good standing with Jacob.

“Clemson stands out,” Jacob said. “I want to go to a game at Death Valley some time. I like the coaches there, and I would be really excited if Clemson offered.”

As a sophomore in 2015, Jacob registered 41 tackles with two sacks, five quarterback hurries and a pass deflection.

Jacob attended Northwestern’s camp in early June and plans to camp at Florida and Tennessee later this summer.
