Philadelphia (Pa.) St. Joseph’s four-star running back D’Andre Swift, one of the highest-rated recruits in the country, will visit Clemson again before he makes a commitment decision near the start of his senior season.
Swift told The Clemson Insider he will commit in late August or early September, and get back to Clemson’s campus sometime this summer.
“I’ve got to talk to my dad about the date, but I know I’m trying to get back down before I make my commitment,” Swift said. “I took a visit to Clemson earlier in the year. I went to see the spring practice. I didn’t really get a feel for the academic part, so that’s why I want to get down again to see the whole aspect.”
Swift said he got a good feel for the football side of things during the spring visit. The 5-foot-10, 205-pounder is a versatile all-purpose weapon who can line up in the backfield, slot or on the edge.
“It went good,” Swift said of his first visit to Clemson. “The team was scrimmaging, so I got to see the tempo of the offense and stuff like that.”
Academics are equally important to Swift, and therefore that’s his primary focus heading into the upcoming trip.
“I want to see the academic part, as well,” Swift said. “I’ve been talking to coach (Tony) Elliot almost every day now. Just making sure I’m going to grow off and on the football field. He’s really about his business, and coach Swinney’s doing a great thing with the program.
“I also want to see if I were to go there, how I would be used. I don’t know how many backs they have now, but that will be something I’m interested in knowing, too. But I know I can compete anywhere, so just knowing what I’m going into.”
Swift has a very close relationship with Elliot.
“Every time he comes up to the school, it’s all smiles when I walk into the room,” Swift said. “He’s a person that can make me laugh. He’s a father figure, you could say. We talk about stuff not related to football. He asks me how my weekend was, about my 4th of July weekend and stuff like that.”
Swift announced his top five schools — Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia and Penn State — in no order on May 25.
What helped the Tigers make the list?
“Just the offense itself and the coaches behind Clemson,” Swift said. “They’re building something special.”
Swift visited Georgia earlier this summer and also toured Penn State with his team. He’s going to Alabama at the end of July and hopes to visit Florida State as well.
Swift is one of the prospects that will be at The Opening finals in Beaverton, Ore., this week. He was named MVP among running backs at The Opening regional in New Jersey in May.
As a junior, Swift ran for 1,029 yards and 12 touchdowns while catching 22 passes for 321 yards and four scores.
