Looking Ahead: Linebacker

The Clemson Insider continues its “Looking Ahead” series with a forward look at Clemson’s top linebacker targets in the 2017 class.

After losing B.J. Goodson and Travis Blanks to the NFL Draft, Clemson signed a trio of linebackers in February: Bradenton (Fla.) five-star Rahshaun Smith, Roswell (Ga.) four-star Tre Lamar and Newnan (Ga.) three-star Jamie Skalski.

Clemson returns several linebackers with playing experience in Ben Boulware (1,249 career snaps), Dorian O’Daniel (268 career snaps), Jalen Williams (85 career snaps) and Kendall Joseph (63 career snaps). Boulware, Joseph and O’Daniel are the projected starters, while Smith, Lamar and Williams are expected to provide depth.

Boulware is the only senior. O’Daniel is a redshirt junior, Joseph is a redshirt sophomore and Williams is a true sophomore.

Clemson landed a commitment from Calhoun (Ga.) three-star Baylon Spector for the 2017 class. He is listed as a safety by some scouting services but will play linebacker at Clemson.

The Clemson Insider believes the Tigers are looking to add a couple more linebackers for the current cycle. Here are a few of the biggest names we’re keeping tabs on:

Drew Singleton – Paramus, N.J.

Paramus Catholic’s Singleton is at the top of Clemson’s board at linebacker. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound four-star is set to visit Clemson this month and has been to Rutgers and Pittsburgh this summer. Singleton told TCI he will release a list of top 12 schools in the near future, and Clemson, he said, “for fact is up there.” Michigan is another top contender for Singleton. Pittsburgh, Georgia, North Carolina and Auburn are among the other schools heavily involved. Singleton doesn’t currently have a commitment date in mind.

Justin Foster – Shelby, N.C.

Foster, a product of Crest High School, is another prospect Clemson prioritizes. The 6-foot-4, 250-pounder last visited Clemson for the Orange and White spring game in April before including the Tigers in his top seven in May. Along with Singleton and Jordan Anthony (see below), Foster competed at The Opening finals in Beaverton, Ore., last week. According to multiple reports, he said while there that Clemson, Tennessee, Notre Dame and Georgia are the schools standing out to him.

Jordan Anthony – Bradenton, Fla.

Anthony of IMG Academy announced on May 13 that Clemson is one of his top 10 schools. Clemson is recruiting him hard, and it is unclear where the Tigers stand among his other finalists, but they appear to be in better shape with Singleton and Foster right now.
