Looking Ahead: Running Back

The Clemson Insider continues its “Looking Ahead” series with a forward look at Clemson’s top running back targets in the 2017 class.

After losing Zac Brooks and C.J. Davidson at the conclusion of the 2015 season, Clemson added another running back in February when Spartanburg five-star Tavien Feaster signed on the dotted line.

Feaster will join a talented group of running backs in Wayne Gallman, Adam Choice, Tyshon Dye and C.J. Fuller.

None of the aforementioned players are seniors, but with a repeat of last season’s success, Gallman will likely elect to forego his senior season and declare early for the NFL Draft.

Memphis (Tenn.) Trezevant four-star running back Cordarrian Richardson is committed to Clemson for the 2017 class. The Clemson Insider believes the Tigers may sign one more running back for the current cycle, and there is one big name we’re keeping tabs on:

D’Andre Swift – Philadelphia, Pa.

Swift, a product of St. Joseph’s Prep, is rated by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 1 prospect in Pennsylvania, the nation’s No. 1 all-purpose back and the nation’s No. 31 player overall.

Clemson offered Swift on July 13, 2015. On May 25 of this year, the 5-foot-10, 205-pounder announced that his top five schools (in alphabetical order) are Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia and Penn State.

After announcing on June 30 that he will “most likely” commit near the start of his senior season, Swift spoke with TCI and confirmed that to be the case, saying his plan is to commit in late August or early September.

Swift also said he will visit Clemson again before making his decision. He also visited Georgia earlier this summer and toured Penn State with his team, and will visit Alabama at the end of July. He hopes to make it to Florida State, as well.

Boding well for Clemson in the battle for Swift’s services is that he has a very close relationship with co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliot. Swift said his main focus heading into his next visit to Clemson is seeing more of the academic aspect of things.

As a junior in 2015, Swift ran for 1,029 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also caught 22 passes for 321 yards and four scores.
