The Clemson Insider continues its “Looking Ahead” series with a forward look at Clemson’s top wide receiver targets in the 2017 class.
The outlook of “Wide Receiver U” is as bright as or brighter than ever.
After losing Charone Peake to the NFL, Clemson signed a trio of stalwarts at receiver in February: Plant City (Fla.) four-star T.J. Chase, Greensboro (N.C.) Page four-star Diondre Overton and Greenville (N.C.) Rose four-star Cornell Powell.
The three players will join what is arguably the nation’s deepest and most gifted group of wideouts in Mike Williams, Artavis Scott, Hunter Renfrow, Deon Cain, Ray-Ray McCloud and Trevion Thompson.
There are no seniors in the aforementioned group, though Williams is likely to enter the NFL Draft after his redshirt junior season. Scott could declare early for the Draft, as well.
Oak Ride (Tenn.) five-star Tee Higgins and Knoxville (Tenn.) Catholic four-star Amari Rodgers are committed to Clemson for the 2017 class.
The Clemson Insider believes the Tigers are one-or-done at wide receiver in the current cycle, meaning they will either sign highly touted wide receiver OrTre Smith (see below) or stand pat until 2018.
OrTre Smith – Mount Pleasant, S.C. (Wando)
Smith is regarded as one of the best prospects, if not the best prospect, in the state. The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder is rated by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 1 player in South Carolina, the nation’s No. 3 athlete and the nation’s No. 136 player overall.
On June 29, Smith announced that his top five schools (in alphabetical order) are Clemson, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Smith visited each of those schools in June before releasing the list.
As TCI reported in The Insider Report on June 11 following Smith’s most recent visit to Clemson, the Tigers have gone All In on Smith’s recruitment. Smith told TCI that he will visit Clemson again before the summer is over, and we are working to determine whether that visit will take place this weekend for Clemson’s fifth-annual All In Cookout.
Smith also said he will visit South Carolina again this summer, which fits the opinion of many in the industry that Smith’s recruitment is a two-horse race between the rival in-state schools.
Smith’s recruiting process has been scrutinized for a while now, and that will continue to be the case until Sept. 11 — his birthday — when he plans to make a commitment decision.
As a junior in 2015, Smith caught 84 passes for 1,364 yards and 18 touchdowns.
