The Clemson Insider continues its “Looking Ahead” series with a forward look at Clemson’s top quarterback targets in the 2018 class.
Clemson didn’t lose any quarterbacks following the 2015 season, and the Tigers signed one in February in highly touted Jonesboro (Ga.) four-star Zerrick Cooper.
Cooper joins Deshaun Watson, Nick Schuessler, Kelly Bryant, Tucker Israel and James Barnes as Clemson’s group of signal-callers.
Schuessler is the only senior, though Watson has already stated his intention to declare early for the NFL Draft after his junior season.
Clemson has two committed quarterbacks for the class of 2017: Brownsburg (Ind.) five-star Hunter Johnson and Loganville (Ga.) Grayson four-star Chase Brice.
Clemson is finished at quarterback in the current cycle, so here are the top names in the class of 2018 that we’re keeping tabs on:
Trevor Lawrence – Cartersville, Ga.
Clemson and Georgia have been in a tight two-horse race for Cartersville High School’s Trevor Lawrence for a while now. Lawrence visited Georgia on Saturday and traveled to Clemson with his parents for a visit Sunday before he heads back home to begin practice with his team Monday. Georgia held a slight advantage for Lawrence’s services entering the weekend, but as TCI reported in The Insider Report on Monday, Lawrence has a great relationship with Clemson’s staff. As you know, Dabo is one of the best in the country at closing the deal with recruits, especially when he gets them on campus. So, as Lawrence readies to make a decision soon, the battle between the Tigers and Bulldogs is too close to call.
Emory Jones – Franklin, Ga.
Clemson offered Emory Jones, a dual-threat quarterback from Heard County High, on May 3. After receiving an offer from Ohio State on May 11, Jones called it his “dream offer” on Twitter. Jones visited Ohio State on July 22 and Tennessee on July 21. 247Sports recently reported that Jones is deciding between the Buckeyes and Volunteers. However, should the Tigers miss out on Lawrence, expect their pursuit of Jones to intensify.
Dakereon Joyner – North Charleston, S.C.
Dakereon Joyner is listed as an athlete by most recruiting services, but he plays quarterback for Fort Dorchester. On June 6, the 6-foot-1, 170-pounder announced that his top 10 schools (in alphabetical order) are Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, N.C. State, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia Tech. His most recent visits have been to N.C. State on July 22 and South Carolina on July 23. Joyner last visited Clemson on June 14. Joyner is highly interested in Clemson and is building a strong relationship with Clemson quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter. While Clemson has not yet offered Joyner as a quarterback — the position he is intent on playing in college — he remains hopeful that a quarterback offer from Clemson will come. In early April, Joyner announced that he will make his commitment decision on June 18, 2017. As a sophomore, he threw for 3,202 yards and 33 touchdowns while rushing for 1,059 yards and 19 scores.
Casey Thompson – Moore, Ok.
Southmoore High’s dual-threat quarterback Casey Thompson is another prospect to keep an eye on. Thompson is rated by the 247Sports Composite as a four-star, the No. 3 player in Oklahoma, the nation’s No. 5 dual-threat quarterback and the nation’s No. 117 player overall. Clemson has not yet offered Thompson, but he visited Clemson on July 13. Most recently, Thompson visited Miami on July 16. The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder has offers from Arizona State, Arkansas State, Houston, Illinois, Iowa State, Louisville, Memphis, Miami, North Carolina, Ohio, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Penn State, SMU, Virginia Tech and West Virginia. Thompson’s recruitment is wide open at this time.
