Notebook: Edmond injury opens opportunities for young corners

Marcus Edmond entered fall camp as the starter opposite of Cordrea Tankersley, but pulled his hamstring on the first day of practice.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney hopes to get Edmond back “before too much longer.” Right now, though, his injury is opening up opportunities for other cornerbacks to show what they can do.

In Edmond’s absence, Mark Fields, Ryan Carter and Trayvon Mullen have all seen time with the first unit.

Fields has gotten the majority of the first-team reps, and Swinney said he has done a good job thus far.

“He’s certainly a really talented young guy that’s maturing a little bit in being an every-down player,” Swinney said.

K’Von Wallace has also had the chance to showcase his versatility and play some at corner.

“He can do it,” Swinney said. “That dynamic guy is what we thought he would be. He can play corner, he can play nickel, he can play both safeties — that’s really what he is. He’s as advertised.”

Disappointed in D. Swinney was disappointed in what he saw from the defense today, saying the defense didn’t come out with enough intensity at the beginning of practice.

At one point when the offense was on its own one-yard line, Wayne Gallman ran 99 yards for a touchdown.

“Just not doing our job. … We’ve got to clean up some things,” Swinney said. “We can’t be feast or famine. It all goes back to doing your job and having your eyes on the right things.

“That was disappointing today, and they came back on the second rack and did a good job, but we may not get another rack (in a game). We have to be ready right out of the gate because we’re playing a really good opponent right out of the gate.”

Young guns. Sophomore receiver Hunter Renfrow had high praise for Clemson’s freshmen wide receivers.

Renfrow talked about the player comparisons Diondre Overton and Cornell Powell have evoked.

Overton is akin to Mike Williams as a freshman, but he’s a step ahead of where Williams was then, according to Renfrow.

“We always joke and we always relate Mike his freshman year to Diondre, and Diondre’s a little bit better,” Renfrow said. “If he’s a little bit better, then he’s going to be very good.”

Renfrow said receivers coach Jeff Scott compares Cornell Powell to former Clemson receiver and current Arizona Cardinals wideout Jaron Brown.

“Coach Scott likes to relate him to Jaron Brown a lot,” Renfrow said, “and he’s playing in the NFL, so that’s a great comparison.”

As for T.J. Chase, he is working behind Renfrow in the slot, and the two players have bonded.

“I’m telling you what, T.J. Chase is probably the nicest guy on the team,” Renfrow said. “He’s respectful and humble, and I like him a lot because he plays my position.”

Injury update.

Center Jay Guillermo suffered a concussion on Saturday night during Clemson’s first practice in full pads.

“He’s out until they tell me he’s back,” Swinney said. “He’ll be alright sometime. He’ll play against Auburn.”

Linebacker Jalen Williams was in a yellow jersey at today’s practice. Swinney said he just got a little banged up.

“He tweaked his hammy the other day,” Swinney said, “but he’ll be alright.”

Swinney said tight end Cannon Smith, who was in a green jersey at practice today, should be back soon. Tight end J.C. Chalk, who was out of his walking boot and in a yellow jersey, should be back soon, as well.
