Following Wednesday’s situational scrimmage, Clemson quarterback Nick Schuessler was very pleased with the offense’s performance.

Despite having a few penalties, some big plays were made which had Schuessler satisfied with the end result.

“I think it went well. Obviously, we have some things that we need to work on, but overall as a team we had a few goals that we wanted to get accomplished and I think we went out there and played well, ” he said.

After being 12 of 16 for 139 yards, the quarterback said he feels like he has progressed from a mental standpoint. Being a fifth-year senior, the veteran’s experience has allowed him to become more comfortable on the field and in the pocket.

“I haved some time to get some reps in. I feel a lot more comfortable out there. I am able to come off certain reads and make certain throws,” Schuessler said. “I think my mental game has definitely progressed since last season and that’s what I am trying to build on.”

With so much talent at wide receiver, Schuessler has really enjoyed the opportunity to be apart of such a talented offense. The quarterback was very impressed with the new guys such as Cornell Powell and Diondre Overton at wide receiver and the way they have  progressed since the spring.

“Being a quarterback in this offense and having those people out there is such a luxury. There is no such thing as a bad ball. As long as it is within ten feet from them, they are going to make a play,” the graduate student said. “They are doing awesome. They have picked up the system so well. They look real fluid. They look real good.”

Specific players that stood out to Schuessler during Wednesday’s situational scrimmage were Powell and tight end Milan Richard.

“Cornell Powell had a great day. He made a bunch of big plays for us. Milan Richard had a great day. Like I said, we have so many great receivers out there. Everybody out there is making plays,” the quarterback said.

Backup quarterback Zerrick Cooper has also caught the attention of Schuessler in camp. He is very impressed with the way the Cooper has progressed and how he has been able to pick things up so quickly.

“It’s always impressive. Every year when a new quarterback comes in  you just watch to see how quickly they pick it up. Zerrick is doing unbelievable,”  Schuessler said. “You know, he gets out there and is able to trust his reads. I mean, he has a huge arm, ya’ll know that, and makes all the throws. Just to see the progression he has made from the first day to where we are now is awesome.”

As Cooper comes on board and adds more competition to the quarterback unit, Schuessler says they all are preparing like they are one play away from the starting quarterback job.

“We, all in the quarterback room, pride ourselves in just preparing like a starter … from me, Tucker (Israel), Kelly (Bryant), and Zerrick, we all prepare like we are one play away,” Schuessler said. “Potentially, we all are like one play away from getting to go out there with the first team so we are just taking it day by day and getting better and progressing each day and each week.”
