Clemson freshman defensive end Xavier Kelly was involved in a moped accident on Highway 93 on Wednesday night involving him and another vehicle.
According to the officer’s notes at the Clemson University Police Department a vehicle struck the moped Kelly was on at 11:30 p.m. in Clemson. The person driving the vehicle was at fault, according to the officer on the scene notes.
Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables said Kelly was flipped when he was hit. He got some scrapes and abrasions and hit his head. He had to receive stitches on his toe.
“He got wiped out. Somebody ran right into him,” Venables said after Thursday’s scrimmage. “He is lucky to be alive.”
Despite the bad wreck, Venables said Kelly will miss about a week of practice.
“He is just very, very lucky. He is very fortunate,” the Clemson coach said.
On Monday night, Clemson lost starting defensive end Austin Bryant for three games due to a foot injury he suffered in practice. He had surgery to repair a fracture in his foot on Tuesday.
Kelly has performed well enough for the coaches in camp to be considered for playing time. Early in camp he was making plays and showing off his potential. However, the rigors of camp and learning the defense has caught up a little bit and the freshman slipped somewhat from a consistency standpoint.
On Thursday, Venables said they still have not decided if they will redshirt him or not. They do plan to prepare him as if he will play this year, but as of right now they have not decided if they will redshirt him or not.
