It seems unlikely Deshaun Watson will be apologizing for anything again this week.

After saying he was sorry for his attitude toward the media—and perhaps others, as well—the junior quarterback looked like a new man on the field for third-ranked Clemson during Saturday’s 59-0 victory over South Carolina State. Watson was brilliant through the air, connecting on 12 of his 15 pass attempts. He accounted for 152 passing yards and three touchdowns before taking a seat prior to halftime.

Watson completed his first eight passes, then missed on three in a row—including a pair of end zone fades that were deflected—and then completed his final four passes. He found Ray-Ray McCloud for his initial pair of touchdowns, the first on a slant route from seven yards out and the second on a downfield throw from 36 yards out as he rolled left. Watson’s third touchdown toss went to Deon Cain on a 17-yard fade route.

During his time in the game, Watson also contributed eight rushing yards on two carries. His biggest contribution, however, may have come on Monday. His assertion that he would never again take any aspect of his position for granted showed leadership, especially given the nervous feelings associated with Clemson’s offense over the season’s first two weeks. His more positive outlook appears to have trickled down, as the entire offense looked free and confident against the Bulldogs.

Unlike last week, when he was needed for all sixty minutes of play, Clemson’s star quarterback got to take an early shower because of his—and the rest of the offense’s—strong play.
