Charlotte (N.C.) Ardrey Kell 2019 safety Jeremiah Gray was one of the visitors Clemson hosted for its game against N.C. State on Saturday.

Gray, the son of former BYU and NFL safety Derwin Gray, recently chatted with The Clemson Insider about his experience.

“I had a great visit at Clemson,” Gray said. “Everything was first-class. Everyone was friendly. The atmosphere was amazing. And the new facilities coming along with the education were awesome.”

What did Gray think of Clemson’s exciting 24-17 win?

“I really enjoyed it,” Gray said. “I thought both teams played really hard, but I thought Clemson responded well to adversity.”

Gray said his visit was highlighted by the atmosphere inside Death Valley.

“My favorite part of my visit was definitely the environment,” Gray said. “Not only was the environment in the stadium amazing with insane loud cheers, but the environment of the team was truly impressive.”

The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder spoke with Clemson special teams and tight ends coach Danny Pearman, the Charlotte-area recruiter, and defensive backs coach Mike Reed while on campus.

“Coach Reed said he’s looking forward to establishing a relationship with me and that he likes me ‘because I’m bigger than him,’” Gray said, laughing.

Gray has a lot of respect for Reed.

“He has a great knowledge of the game,” Gray said. “He wants to develop his players for life, not just football. And he produces NFL-caliber DBs.”

Gray was first offered in January by BYU, where his dad played from 1989-92. Derwin went on to be selected by Indianapolis in the fourth round of the 1993 NFL Draft and played five seasons with the Colts before joining the Carolina Panthers in 1998.

Jeremiah, who also holds an offer from Wake Forest, credited his dad for helping him become the player he is.

“I’ve learned a lot from my dad about X’s and O’s, of course,” Jeremiah said, “but he also gives me tips and pointers when it comes to recruiting. I wouldn’t be half the player I am today if it wasn’t for him. He has taught me a lot of things that I didn’t know about recruiting that he went through.”

Jeremiah said BYU, Wake Forest, Arizona, N.C. State, Penn State and Virginia are currently recruiting him the hardest.

“After my experience at Clemson, I hope the level of interest continues to increase,” he said. “My family and I were very impressed.”

Gray has also visited Wake Forest, Virginia and N.C. State this season. He will be at Penn State on Saturday for the Nittany Lions’ game against Ohio State.
