While there is plenty of information circling the internet about matchups, personnel and schemes that relate to third-ranked Clemson and the opponents of the Tigers, The Clemson Insider decided to also dig a bit deeper into the dynamic individual personalities of Clemson’s student athletes.
This edition of Player Spotlight highlights wide receiver Hunter Renfrow. The original walk-on redshirted in 2014 and earned a scholarship before the start of last season. Renfrow proved to be a reliable target for Deshaun Watson in 2015, and he made key plays in big games. Two of his five touchdowns from that season were in the National Championship Game.
But what is Renfrow like off the field? TCI found out.
What is your favorite color?
“Gold.”
What food can you not live without?
“French Fries. I love French fries.”
What is your favorite movie?
“The Patriot for sure. I love old war movies, so The Patriot is my favorite.”
If you could only binge watch one show on Netflix for the rest of your life, what would it be?
“I’m watching the Blacklist right now and it is pretty good, so I would have to say that one.”
When you’re not playing football, what do you do?
“I hang out with my girlfriend and then compete with my roommates any way that I can, whether it is Xbox or paper football on the table.”
How would your friends describe you?
“They would describe me as outgoing, but when I get around other people I don’t know, probably kind of shy and I don’t talk very much.”
If you didn’t play football, what would you do?
“I’d probably play baseball.”
If you could meet any celebrity, who would you choose?
“I’m not sure. A celebrity? Tim Tebow maybe just because growing up, he was just a big hero to me and a cool guy.”
Is that the athlete you admire the most?
“Yes, definitely Tim Tebow.”
Do you have any hidden talents?
“Not really. I play Ping-Pong. I guess I am good at Ping-Pong. I don’t have too many hidden talents.”
What has been your best memory at Clemson so far?
“We always go to the indoor facility, me and a bunch of the roommates and friends, and play wiffle ball on Saturday nights in the off-season and stuff like that. That is always fun to me.”
How did you decide on wiffle ball?
“I guess going back to baseball. It is just a fun game that you don’t really get to play that much. It is not everyday that you go and get eight on eight and play wiffle ball. You usually go play basketball and stuff like that, so wiffle ball is just a fun game.”
On Saturday, every time you caught the ball, all the fans cheered specifically for you. What is that like?
“It’s definitely cool. It kind of puts you out of your body and helps you realize and appreciate all the people at Clemson and all the people that helped you get back on the field and all the fans that appreciate you.”
Do you still feel like people don’t know who you are off of the field?
“Yeah that is what I was thinking. I worked hard for two weeks, the first two weeks of games so that people would recognize me and then I lost it all the next four weeks. I’m trying to get that back now,” Renfrow said, laughing.
