ORLANDO, Fla.— As Clemson makes its arrival in Orlando, Florida Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuente participated in a pre-game press conference on Friday with Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney discussing Saturday’s 2016 ACC Championship Game at Orlando’s Camping World Stadium.
Here is what we heard:
For Fuente, it is all about establishing a team identity and working hard towards the goals the Hokies set at the beginning of the year.
“For us it is hard, smart, and tough. We want to be known as a group of people, whether on the football field or off the football field,” he said. “We work hard in the classroom, in the community, and on the field. We have an intelligent group of kids that play smart football, do well in school, and a group of guys who are tough regardless of the circumstances whether it is rain, cold weather, or wind or your up or your down or you are doing well or not. Our guys battle through. That’s the mentality we have instilled since day one.”
Fuente spoke of the challenges the Hokies will face as they take on the No. 3 Tigers for a chance at snagging the ACC conference title.
“It’s going to be a tremendous challenge. They are very good in the secondary,” the Hokies’ coach said. “They will play tight coverage. There are times when teams will try and run the ball and the ball won’t get past the front six or seven. They are skilled. They certainly understand the scheme. They will be the biggest challenge we have had today.
“I hope we can cause a few turnovers. The bottom line is nobody has stopped them offensively. They have tried to slow them down. They have tried to limit a possession by getting a turnover. Tried to do anything you can to keep them out of the red zone. If you can create a turnover or two and hold onto the ball offensively you kind of have the chance to steal a possession. I think this is going to be important for us to win this game.”
During his press conference, Fuente showed great respect for Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson and spoke highly of the successes the quarterback has experienced throughout his time at Clemson.
“From afar, not being in the media room or with him on a daily bases, my impression of him is he is a critically driven young man,” Fuete said. “Things I have read about him in terms of his academic aspirations combined with his athletic goals and achievements. He can do it all. He has length. He has mastered their scheme. Offensively, he is in total control. He has played in big ball games and he is not just a thrower of the football he is a accomplished passer. He has a bright future ahead. I don’t see any weakness in anything he does.”
