Clemson held Mercer to just 30-percent shooting on Saturday as the Tigers rolled to a 90-47 victory over the Bears at Littlejohn Coliseum.

After the game, the media spoke to forward Donte Grantham and head coach Brad Brownell. Here is what we heard:

With five guys in double figures, 15 assists and only seven turnovers, Brownell was more than pleased with his team’s performance who dominated just about every possession of the game.

“Really strong performance by our team. I couldn’t be more pleased with how we played. I think Mercer is a pretty good team with a really good coach, and we just caught them today,” Brownell said. “They caught us on a good day, we were really ready. I thought our guys had three good days of practice. We were really prepared defensively. When we started making shots early, I think it really just put our guys in a good place.

“I thought we played exceptionally well, we only had seven turnovers and fifteen assists. We just did everything you need to do to win a game like this. We didn’t give them a lot of easy baskets, we disrupted them, and had five guys in double figures. So I’m really proud of the way our guys played. I thought we got better today.”

The media asked Brownell if he was pleased more with the 90 points the Tigers put on the scoreboard or the 47 points the Tigers held Mercer to.

“The 47, because this is a team that can score. They do a lot of different things. He (Coach Bob Hoffman) runs some unique sets offensively. I just thought we were really prepared. We had a good game plan and I thought we executed it,” Brownell said. “I thought our defense was really good and to come back in the second half with a big lead and play the same way shows maturity, so that was good to see.”

As one of five Clemson players in double figures, Grantham was 6-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-6 from behind the arc, totaling 19 points to lead all scorers. Grantham said he was feeling confident on Saturday.

“Every game, I feel confident about my game. I credit them (teammates) for giving me the ball and I just made open shots,” the junior said. “We just wanted to come out here and make a statement, you know, that we’re a good team. We believe that, but we have to showcase that.”

Up until this point in the season, Brownell said he is pleased with the stretch his guys have been on. Clemson has won four straight games, and is now 6-2 on the season.

“We need to play well during this time, and we have so far,” he said. “Hopefully, we will continue that on Tuesday. We’ve had a little home stand here to get ourselves going. I thought the Nebraska win was big because we didn’t play quite as well. We found a way to win a tough game and now we’ve handled two teams that we need to handle. Hopefully, we can keep that going,” Brownell said.

From a player’s perspective, Grantham thinks practice has made all the difference for the Tigers thus far.

“We’ve really been focusing in practice, really treating practice as games. We believe that if you practice well, you play well,” he said.

Clemson will be back in action on Tuesday when it hosts S.C. State at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
